If we haven’t learned anything, we have learned that we were not prepared to handle a pandemic, not personally nor professionally. The good news is that it is not too late for you to become and stay prepared in the event of any future disasters. Three things that you can do NOW to ensure that you and your family are prepared for the next disaster:
Name a Healthcare Power of Attorney and Financial Power of Attorney NOW! In the event that you have a medical emergency, do you know who is going to handle your affairs and how they will do so? For example, can your family access your bank accounts in order to pay your bills? Can your loved ones contact your mortgage company or insurance companies to notify them of your incapacity and handle your affairs? If you do not have a Healthcare Power of Attorney, then I can assure you that the answer is no. You need to name someone as your healthcare agent so that in the event that you are not able to handle your affairs, then someone you can trust can do it for you. What if you do nothing? That’s easy! Your bills won’t get paid…
Finally, make sure that ALL of your bank accounts either have a Joint accountholder named on them or a payable on death designee, in case you should pass away. The last thing you want your family to have to worry about in the midst of their grief is how to handle your final expenses, like your burial and funeral expenses.
